A Friendly Cooperative Society for Low Income Earners in Sierra Leone

Poverty reduction still remains a major problem for the government and development organizations in Sierra Leone.

  • The honest and hardworking wage employees such as office messengers, clerks, teachers, security guards, petty traders, cart pushers in Sierra Leone most times end up as paupers or complete dependents when they retire

  • The low wages or income makes it impossible for majority of hard working Sierra Leoneans to plan for basic family expenses such as children education, healthcare and support services. Families are deprived of the capacity to properly equip their children with the best chance of getting out of the web of poverty they are entangled.

Poverty in Sierra Leone today is so rampant and deep rooted that it will be impossible to fight poverty individually. There is the urgent need for the poor and hard working to come together, and in numbers and pool resources and ideas to carry out activities that will bring reasonable income and hope to the individual homes.

It is behind this background that the ICS was formed. The reasoning also follows that when poor people come together, pool their resources and embark on realistic poverty alleviation programs to improve themselves; it sets the stage for genuine partnership and makes it easier for governments, development organizations and philanthropic individuals to participate and expect the best results and satisfaction.

The ICS is a promising answer to poverty alleviation in Sierra Leone.
